The Rural Alberta Advantage - ‘Don’t Haunt This Place’
Fronted by the Alberta born and raised Nils Edenlof, The Rural Alberta Advantage are the latest outfit to hop aboard the Saddle Creek Records roster. With the label home to the likes of founder Conor Oberst and his various projects, Cursive and Tokyo Police Club, I’m approaching their debut ‘Hometowns’ half expecting great things from the Toronto based trio.
The record sounds undeniably a lot like Neutral Milk Hotel, a fact well acknowledged and a source of criticism somewhat, aside from the whole host of ticked boxes. Maybe just blend with The Shins and add a dash of Okkervil River and we’re getting there.
On the whole, it’s a solid debut, paving the way for a steady progression through their musical careers. It’s tracks such as ‘Don’t Haunt This Place’ and ‘Four Night Rider’ which pose the capabilities of firing the band towards recognition amongst the wider indie circle, much deserved on the back of thirteen songs about growing up in rural Alberta.
